2016 "Honor Neyland Day" Aug 31st 2016 4pm
"Honor Neyland Day" as it is now called, started informally in 2014.

Many lessons were learned. While the fans went to the grave of General Neyland with good intentions, many veterans. community members and fans thought it was kind of disrespectful, as one message board wrote "to go have a tailgate party, in a national cemetery
In 2015, under the guidance of football media member Dan Andrews, the tradition changed from going to the grave to ask for victories, to going to the grave to honor General Neyland and to show respect to the entire cemetery and the soldiers who fought for our country.
New rules were put in place. No University of Tennessee merchandise is to lay rest at the gravesite. Instead, fans now bring orange roses. General Neyland's Grave is allowed two roses on top. One in each direction. All other roses are to be placed in unified direction on top of the graves of fellow warriors that served our country
Some people might wonder why we do not want to checker the grave site with orange and white. The simple answer is military graves are the same color same size and same formation, so we look to honor that tradition.
You are going to a cemetery, dress accordingly.

The reading of the Maxims starts with the newest reporters covering UTK who have never covered a game at Neyland. This is done so that reporters from other markets, that come to Knoxville, understand that when they take the sideline, never again in their career, will they ever have an honor as great as covering the Vols from the sidelines where General Neyland once stood.
Honor, respect, tradition. After the 4pm memorial and off the sacred grounds of the Veteran's gravesite, same rules that apply during Memorial Day apply here.
